Motorists planning to take a trip over to the continent over the next few months have been urged to check that they comply with European motoring laws .
James Harrison, chief executive of insurance comparison site Insurancewide.com, said that it "really does pay" to check European regulations and that motorists are covered by their car insurance policy when driving abroad.
According to Mr Harrison, UK car insurance policies should provide an International Motor Certificate that shows the driver has the minimum cover required to drive overseas.
"But beware, it will only cover your liability to a third party and doesn't include any damage to your own vehicle or any medical or hospital expenses you may incur," he advised.
The expert's recommendations follow a recent study by Cornhill Direct , which revealed that more than 75 per cent of people admitted to being "apprehensive" about driving abroad .
However, the firm found that the majority of people it questioned had not researched the "rules of the road" before embarking on their journey.
