Households affected by last summer's floods have been warned that they could be at risk from rogue traders offering to provide their services.
Lloyds TSB Insurance claimed that the cost of repairing work carried out by "bogus" builders could exceed £2 billion, after such traders cost homeowners more than £1.36 billion last year.
Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "It's understandable that those affected by this summer's flooding are eager to get the repairs to their home completed as quickly as possible, especially with Christmas just around the corner."
However, it is "equally important" to make sure that any work carried out is done so safely and is undertaken by qualified professionals, he advised.
According to a report by the Association British Insurers, the summer's floods resulted in approximately 100,000 domestic insurance claims and 20,000 commercial claims .
The association estimated the total cost of the damage to have exceeded £3 billion.
