DfT allows electronic car insurance certificates

The Department for Transport's (DfT's) decision to allow electronic motor insurance certificates has been welcomed by one car insurance provider.

Hayley Parsons, managing director of Gocompare.com, said that the cover note which was previously required was the "weakest link" in the insurance process.

While people are now able to purchase car insurance policies online , they have still had to wait for their cover to arrive in the post, Ms Parsons commented.

" Online insurance certificates are the motor insurance equivalent of the St Pancras high-speed link - updating that process will hugely enhance the experience of buying your motor insurance online," she commented.

The move will also have significant environmental benefits, she stated, suggesting that millions of policy packs will no longer need to be carried by road and the amount of paper used may also reduce.

Justin Jacobs, the Association of British Insurer's assistant director of property , motor and liability, said that electronic certificates would have "significant benefits" for drivers.
