Driving ban close for many motor insurance customers, study shows

Thousands of motor insurance customers are one false step away from receiving a driving ban, new research reveals.

According to a study by Direct Line Car Insurance, more than one in five people with points on their licence would have their licence temporarily rescinded if snapped once by a speed camera.

And the research also points out that 92 per cent of all drivers who received points on their licence did so because they were caught breaking local speed limits.

Following the study, the insurance company's motor spokesperson Emma Hoyler urged car insurance customers to ensure they kept within the rules.

"With the advent of speed cameras and the introduction of points for being caught for driving using a mobile phone, we urge motorists not to break the law as they could face numerous consequences," she said.

As many motor insurance policyholders may already be aware, last month saw the implementation of strict new punishments for drivers caught on the mobile.

Now, road users found to be committing the offence will receive a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence, which could potentially affect their motor insurance premiums.
