Half of all people living in areas prone to flooding are unaware of the dangers, claims a new study.
Some five million householders live in flood-risk locations but 2.5 million of them do not realise the problems posed by flooding, according to a report from home insurance provider American Express Insurance Services.
The firm is advising these homeowners, as well as those who do not have contents cover, to check their home insurance policies to ensure they are fully protected in the event of a flood.
"Whilst buildings insurance is compulsory for those with a mortgage, contents cover is not," said Joanne Field, marketing manager for the company.
"A flood can wipe out the contents of a home in minutes with losses being thousands of pounds more than the cost of any insurance protection."
The home insurance company is also advising householders living in at-risk areas to assemble a flood kit in order to be prepared for a worst case scenario.
An online flood warning service is offered by the Environment Agency for any Britons looking to receive advanced notice of flooding.
