Although Christmas lights do not make any difference to home insurance policies, an expert has urged people take precautions against the risk of fire.
David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said that households can take a "few simple measures" to ensure that the risk of fire posed by some Christmas decorations are reduced.
Homeowners should not leave candles burning when a room is unoccupied or place candles near to flammable materials or decorations, Mr Rochester advised.
Additionally, people should be wary of "overloading" electrical sockets when putting up Christmas lights, as this can also potentially lead to fire, he claimed.
"Don't leave Christmas lights switched on when you are out of the home, or at night when going to bed," he added.
