The honeymoon sector is expected to boom this year, according to a leading insurance company which is warning loved-up couples to ensure they have travel insurance in place for their "ultimate getaway".
American Express Travel Insurance notes that marriage for straight and same-sex pairs has never been as popular as it currently is.
However, with a quarter of couples spending over £5,000 on their honeymoons, the insurance company reminds them not to ignore the importance of travel insurance.
"When you are planning your trip of a lifetime – be it a foreign wedding and honeymoon combined or just your honeymoon – it is easy to overlook something as basic as your travel insurance cover," comments Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance.
She says couples spending more on their post-nuptial getaway than on an average holiday should double-check that their travel insurance policy will cover them adequately.
The insurance company's research shows that honeymoon expenses account for a large proportion of the wedding budget.
While the average celebration costs over £16,000, newlyweds spend an average of £2,475 on their honeymoon, it has been found.
