"Careless homeowners" not closing windows could leave themselves wide open to burglars and hefty home insurance claims, according to experts.
Insuresupermarket, a price comparison site for many products including home insurance, car insurance and travel insurance, warns that many burglars use the hot weather to take advantage of homeowners' complacency.
The company also warns that not having satisfied stipulations on a home insurance policy could leave victims uninsured.
Richard Mason, director of insuresupermarket, commented: "Longer and lighter evenings are a welcome break from the winter gloom and of course many people will think nothing of opening a window to let some air in.
"However, an opportune thief could see this as an open invitation to pay a visit to your house and if you do not have insurance or have failed to satisfy the policy’s stipulations, this could be the most costly visitor to ever cross your threshold.
"Don’t give the thieves an easy route into your house - if they see an open door or window they are likely to try their luck, even if there is someone inside."
With record temperatures recorded throughout the UK in the recent heatwave, many Brits may have been tempted to leave windows open, possibly resulting in burglary.
